rhythm games

i like to play rhythm games! specifically 4k VSRGs (four-key vertically scrolling rhythm games). i am kinda good at them? not the best in the world ofc but i'm (at the time of writing) in the top 27k globally for 4k quaver which is pretty neat

maybe the time i spend on them would be better spent learning a "real" instrument? but that is much more physically tiring than sitting in front of a screen and pressing keys every 80 milliseconds

games i play

  • quaver: 4k VSRG, desktop. my profile. i play with basically the default skin (i modified it so timing lines would be pink to stand out from white notes more) and scroll speed ~31
  • vivid/stasis: 4k VSRG, desktop, also an incredible visual novel. i need to write an entire page on this game at some point, i love it so much. also i made a chart viewer and a set of command line tools for it!!
  • phigros: VSRG, mobile. i play it on my phone, probably would be better to play on a tablet?

my controller

i use a custom controller i designed and built for 4k VSRGs!! it is more comfortable than a normal keyboard, has very light keys, is portable, is kinda quiet, and has very low latency.

a pink keyboard device with two sets of two white and blue keys at a slight outward angle, with extra space on the outside to rest the pinky and ring fingers photo of same device from the rear, showing its usb c port

it uses an rp2040-zero microcontroller (with gp2040 firmware), kailh deep sea silent low profile switches (with 20g springs swapped in from some gchocs), g20 keycaps, and a custom 3d printed case. at some point i was working on a cnc milled aluminum case for it but i never finished that
